Vea assisted distressed yacht

Fri Sep 21 10:50:05 CEST 2012 Timsen

In the night of Sep 18, 2012, the "Vea" assisted a yacht off Bergen the mast and sail of which had landed in the sea six miles west of Ryvarden after the mast had snapped in gusty weather. The crew of three on board the yacht notified Rogaland radio which sent the lifeboat "Bergen Kreds" from the NSSR-station Haugesund. The "Vea" which was near the sailing boat arrived at the casualty 15 minutes before the lifeboat. Mast and sail were in the water, and the crew had trouble getting rid of it. The lifeboat assisted with a hacksaw to cut off the wires and rods that held the mast which took about an hour. Then the lifeboat towed the yacht into calmer waters in the Bømlafjorden. There the rudder and propeller were tested, and the boat continued to Bergen with own power.
