One convoy guided to Bering Sea, more ships seeking assistance
The 'Vaygach' guided a convoy of five Far East bound ships, including the 'Nordic Nuluujaak', 'Gulden Suek', 'Nordic Qinnsua', 'Golden Pearl' and 'UHL Fusion' to ice free waters in the Bering Strait in the morning of Nov 21, and all five ships continued the voyagess towards their ports of destination. The icebreaker meanwhile turned back to assist three Russian cargo ships, bound for Arkhangelsk. As of Nov 24, it was leading the convoy in the East Siberian Sea in heavy ice in northwestern direction to pick up three more cargo ships and one tanker, including the Finnish bulk carrier 'Kumpula', all four being westbound and stuck near each other about 150 nautical miles northwest of the 'Vaygach'.
Ice convoy has reached Chukchi Sea
The 'Vaygach' was leading convoy of five Far East bound ships, including the 'Nordic Nuluujaak', 'Gulden Suek', 'Nordic Qinnsua', 'Golden Pearl' and 'UHL Fusion' through the Chukchi Sea in a broken curve, battling ice cover and floes. The ships were expected to reach the Bering Strait within around 2-3 days. West bound ships, including the 'Kuumpula', were stuck in ice fields north of Kotelny island, bordering the Laptev and East Siberian Seas, waiting for assistance.
Collision in ice convoy
On March 15, 2017, the bulkcarrier "Nordic Barents" was in collision with the "Vaygach" while under ice escort in the Kara Sea. The freighter’s bow struck the icebreaker’s wooden fender. The icebreaker did not suffer damages, while the bulk carrier sustained a hull dent without breaches. The convoy kept navigating through the ice. The Nordic Barents" was en route from Port Dickson to Murmansk.
