Ferry out of service quite a while

Thu Dec 04 10:34:27 CET 2014 Timsen

The "Åfjord" will be out of commission quite a while for the repiars of the grounding damage suffered at Finneset in Øksfjord. It was still unclear whether the accident happened in relation with the unwellness of the first officer. The lifeboat "Oskar Tybring IV" in vain had tried to refloat the ferry as the water level had fallen since the grounding. After the ship was refloated in the morning of Dec 1, divers of the lifeboat had inspected and documented the damage to the hull at the request of the ferry company. There were no leaks or large holes in the hull but several dents. A ferry with about equivalent capacity was on its way and was to be put into service between Hasvik and Øksfjord in West Finnmark during the week. Meanwhile, a ferry with a smaller capacity was operating on the route. Norwegian report with photos: http://www.nrk.no/nordnytt/ma-pa-verksted-etter-grunnstoting-1.12075766

Ferry refloated and berthed for damage inspections

Mon Dec 01 10:21:23 CET 2014 Timsen

The "Åfjord" was pulled off the rocks by the tugs "Beta" and "Beta Mob" of the Buksér og Berging AS in the morning of Dec 1 at 9 a.m. and docked in Øksfjord for a damage survey. An attempt to refloat with own power had failed, but within one hour the ferry could be refloated with a tug. The ferry "Hårek" was inserted as a replacement in the morning on the run between Hasvik and Øksfjord. The ferry sailed from Øksfjord at 09.15 a.m. for the first time. The "Hårek" was also scheduled to sail between Tverrfjord and Øksfjord at 2.20 p.m. Towards the end of the week the spare ferry "Tysnes" would take over which was sent on Dec 1. Ferry aground at Finneset

Sun Nov 30 21:14:54 CET 2014 Timsen

In the evening of Nov 30, 2014, around 8 p.m. the "Åfjord" ran aground between Øksfjord and Hasvik at Finneset. There were 15 people on board, four crew members and 11 passengers. None of the passengers were injured. The ferry was resting on the rocks with significant list to starboard. Some hydraulic oil was leaking out from a thruster. The fist officer got unwell and the MRCC sent a Sea King helicopter from Banak, two lifeboats and a tug. The lifeboat "Oscar Tybring IV" was expected on scene at 9 p.m. At 9.04 p.m. the police reported that all 11 passengers have been taken ashore. They were taken to Alta by bus.
