USNS Montford Point on final sea trials

Fri Jul 19 09:58:37 CEST 2013 arnekiel

An unusual new military ship is headed to Everett for final sea trials. The Navy says the USNS Montford Point is its first mobile landing platform. It’s owned by the Military Sealift Command. It’s 785 feet long and has a deck that can be lowered for hovercraft to float on and float off. It also can be used as a seagoing pier to transfer equipment between large ships and landing craft. The Montford Point is due at Everett Friday (July 19, 2013) to prepare for the final Navy inspection in the fall. The Navy also says it is scheduled for work in the late fall at Vigor Marine in Portland to add cargo transfer features. The Montford Point was built in San Diego.
