Tanker diverted to Venezuela to avoid seizure
The "British Cygnet", loaded with a cargo of crude oil, loaded at Primorsk, was diverted to Venezuela waters to avoid seizure and anchored in the Gulf of Venezuela on May 7, 2018. At least two Caribbean courts had ordered the seizure of PDVSA (Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. - Venezuelan state-owned oil and natural gas company) assets, after a CONOCO Phillips claim, seeking for compensation of company’s $2 billion losses inflicted by nationalization of its’ project in Venezuela in 2007. Russian and the US crude were bought by PDVSA to supply Curacao refinery, where Russian and US crude are mixed with crude from Orinoco Belt oil fields.
