Struggle for Ursel is lasting

Wed Feb 06 09:45:18 CET 2013 Timsen

The "Ursel" which got stuck on the Main in the evening of Feb 4 suffered more serious damage than first thought. Dewatering of the ship continued on Feb 5. Divers found a vertical breach at port side, and the foreship suffered significant damage too. Three pumps were working around the clock to cpoe with the flooding until divers manage to patch the leakages. There was no decision yet whether the "Ursel" will have to be unloaded in Würzburg or may be taken to another port. Ursel blocked Main lock

Tue Feb 05 09:06:55 CET 2013 Timsen

Being en route Erlangen-Rotterdam the "Ursel" ran aground in the approach of the Goßmannsdorf lock in the Würzburg district on the Main and sprang aleak. At 8.40 p.m. the ship was underway downriver and drifted perpendicular in the approach canal of the lock by yet unknown reasons. It carried a cargo of 1000 tons corn. The master was unable to regain control, and the ship blocked the canal begin stuck with its bow on the shore and with the stern on a dam. Shipp traffic on the waterway had to be stopped. Meanwhile water started to pour into the cabin of the deck hand. The fire brigades from Randersacker, Eibelstadt, Ochsenfurt and Frickenhausen were called and started to dewater the ship so far that it could be stabilized. In the evening it was decided to raise the water level off the lock so that the "Ursel" refloated with own power aroudn 11 p.m. At 11.30 p.m. the ship was moored at the shore close to the lock. High water levels and strong currents had hampered the salvage operation. Dewatering of the vessel continued all night long. Further decisions were to be taken on Jan 5. The amount of damage was unknown yet. The water police Würzburg launched an investigation in the accident.
