Fishing vessel sank after water ingress
The "Urbegi" requested assistance in the morning of June 3, 2016, at 7.15 a.m. after having suffered water ingress 43 miles west of Finisterre off the Spanish Atlantic coast. The ship which had left its base Corme the previous day was about to return at that time. Salvage ships and the helicopter Helimer 209 were deployed in an SAR Operation. On scene were the helicopter "Helimar 209" which monitored the scene and the salvage vessel "Salvamar Altair" of Salvamento Marítimo, based in Camariñas, the "María Pita" as well as the m/v "Fei Tien" which came alongside the fishing vessel, delivering on board an extra pump. At 9.20 a.m the situation seemed to be under control, but after an engine failure it was decided to evacuate the crew of six while it was still tried to tow the ship to the port of Camariñas. But the crack in the engine was too serious - the vessel sank one hour later at 12.43 p.m. when it was just 15 miles from Finisterre.
