Death toll in ship fire rose to seven

Mon Oct 29 22:37:20 CET 2012 Timsen

The death toll in the fire incident on the "Union Brave", in which six labourers died on October 6, rose to 7 on Oct 29. One of the injured workers succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Bhavnagar. A major fire had broken out after a blast at the tail end of the oil tanker that was being dismantled at plot number 82 that has been allocated to Kiran Ship Breaking Company owned by R K Jain. Five persons had died on the spot. All the deceased people belonged to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. After the incident, Bhavnagar police had arrested three persons, including ship-breakers Ramkrushna Jain and Vipin Jain in connection with the fire. All the three accused were out on bail.

5 workers die in explosion & fire on tanker 'Union Brave' at Alang

Sun Oct 07 08:39:42 CEST 2012 arnekiel

An explosion and subsequent fire on-board a beached tanker at the Alang-Sosiya Ship Recycling Yard killed five workers and severely injured two others on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, officials said. The fire broke out at 12.45 pm on the 163-metre-long MT Union Brave, a tank-ship purchased recently by Bhavnagar-based Kiran Ship Breaking Co. for recycling. The vessel was beached at plot 82. Witnesses said the fire appears to have broken out after workers used blow torches to cut open a compartment near the pump-room towards the rear part of the ship. Workers in other parts of the yard did much of the rescue work and cut open more parts to pull out their trapped co-workers. They apparently found two workers on a higher part of the ship and pulled them out, but could not enter deep enough to rescue five others who were trapped in the inferno.
