Bulk carrier assisted distressed vessel

Wed Sep 21 11:13:38 CEST 2022 Timsen

The 'Uni Sunshine' took in tow the m/v 'Ogoi Ratz' after the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) received a request for assistance from Port Moresby’s MRCC in the evening of Sep 10, 2022, with the AMSA requesting ADF SAR support to enhance their response efforts on Sep 12. A P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft from No. 11 Squadron, based at RAAF Edinburgh, was deployed to Cairns to assist in the operation in the vicinity of Woodlark Island. While heading towards Bougainville, the aircraft picked up a small radar contact that was the missing vessel. Once in radio contact with the 'Ogoi Ratz', it was confirm edall four crew members were well. The team got in radio contact with the 'Uni Sunshine' then, which was in the vicinity on its way from Tauranga to Lanshan. The 'Ogoi Ratz' was 70 nautical miles from the coastline, the 'Uni Sunshine' was 24 nautical miles from there. The Poseidon remained overhead providing visual oversight, as well as additional guidance until the bulk carrier arrived and took the 'Ogoi Ratz' under tow.
