Fire in engine room
On June 2, 2016, around 9 a.m. a fire broke out in the engine room of the "Uilenspiegel" off the Wester Scheldt estuary near Westkapelle, 10 miles out in the Northsea. The crew activated the fire extinction means, and the fire rescue dispatched an MIRG-team to the ship aboard the KNRM lifeboat "Zeemannshoop" from Breskens. The "Uly" of the station Westkapelle was mobilized to the ship too. The crew of the hopper dredger managed to extinguish the fire by flooding the engine room with CO2, and no injuries were reported. Due to the rough sea on scene, it was decided that the MIRG-team would not be transferred aboard. The ship was subsequently ventilated. On June 3 the tug "Odin" (IMO: 9572824) attended the ship and towed it to the Damen Shiprepair Yard in Flushing at 4.15 p.m. Dutch reports with photos and videos: https://www.knrm.nl/nieuws/knrm-reddingstation-breskens/brand-op-hopperzuiger https://www.knrm.nl/nieuws/knrm-reddingstation-westkapelle/uly-rukt-uit-voor-brand-in-baggerschip
