Oil spill during bunkering operations
A serious fuel spill occurred at Kwai Chung Container Terminal in Hong Kong on Aug 20, 2024, when th 'TS Kobe' was being refueled at Berths 6 and 7 by the bunker tanker 'Yee Lee 2' of the local fuel supplier Yee Lee. The incident was caused by an improperly tightened flange at the refueling station, resulting in a major fuel leak. The Hong Kong Marine Department promptly dispatched a team of personnel to the scene to investigate and initiate emergency cleanup operations after receiving the report around 10 p.m. The spill affected a broad area, covering the waters around Kwai Chung Terminals No. 4, 6, and 7, and partially drifting towards Tsing Yi and Stonecutters Island. The oil heavily coated the port side of the affected vessels. It was indicated that the refueling hose had not been closed properly, causing substantial spillage onto the deck. Despite emergency measures including cleanup operations by the Hong Kong Marine Department, it was anticipated that the cleanup would be protracted, with a full resolution possibly taking at least a month given the complex cleanup operations and the severe environmental impact.
