Abandoned bulk carrier threatened to sink

Mon Sep 14 11:38:54 CEST 2020 Timsen

The 'Triumph', which was abandoned in the bay of Ensenada since years, has begun to take on water and was threatened to sink with a significant load of fuel and minerals which might cause a major environmental disaster, on Sep 11, 2020. The bulk carrier arrived on Aug 14, 2017 in Ensenada Bay, where it has spent 36 months with s273 tonnes of fuel and 47.000 tonnes of bauxite, that will be unloaded. The representative of the Mexican Government in Baja California, said earlier after meeting with the general director of the Integral Port Administration (API) of Ensenada, that the cargo will be downloaded in the coming days. To carry out this action, the API will work in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy, chemical specialists and other dependencies of the Mexican Government. The manoeuvres that the authorities planned on the vessel were , first, to lighten its load to move it from the anchorage and later to cross the navigation channel of the bay to enter the port and finish the unloading of fuel and minerals. The vessel was docked at Pier one of the Ensenada API on August 14, 2017, after requesting a forced arrival to carry out repair works on one of its engines. Due to the engine damage, the vessel had been adrift in Pacific waters, between Ensenada and Hawaii, until it was towed to Ensenada. In February 2018, a precautionary embargo fell on it, which was notified to the Mexican authorities. A month later, the crew notified that their salaries for the last few months had not been covered and in May the Mexican Government ordered the 18 crew members to be repatriated to their countries and since then the vessel has been abandoned without personnel on board and in charge of the authorities.
