Lonesome and unexperienced mate caused vessel loss
The grounding of the "Trans Agila" in the Kalmar Sound in November 2012 was caused by the lack of experience of the mate, the accident investigation commission concluded. The ship was underway from Västerås to Åhus when it passed the Masknaggen l/h on the wrong side. The engine room was breached and filled with water. The second mate had been alone on the bridge, although the vessel was underway at night and in the dark while navigating in a difficult area. After two days the ship could be pulled off, but it was declared a total loss.
