Toronto shifted away from berth in gusts

Thu Dec 27 18:55:18 CET 2012 Timsen

While being unloaded at the Dundalk Marine Terminal in Baltimore, the "Toronto" and the "Salome" (IMO: 9515412) shifted away from the berth where they were ocked amid strong winds in the night of Dec 26, 2012, snapping the lines tying it and damaging a crane. The vessel was carrying heavy machinery, farm equipment and other vehicles,. The lines snapped before 7:30 p.m., and the vessel began shifting away from the berth. One of the ships came in contact with the crane while the ramp was down because the ship was being worked and the ramp made contact. It took about an hour for the ships to be brought back under control and retied to their berths. The wind at the port had suddenly picked up amid the stormy weather in the night and put tension on the lines. Tugs responded quickly to pull the ships back into their correct position. An investigation was under way.
