Falling hose from tanker killed barge master
A 48-year-old man from Spijkenisse, the captain of the Belgian tank barge "Beringzee" (MMSI: 205508590), in the morning of Aug 29, 2013, succumbed to the injuries he sustained on Aug 26 at 1 pm. in an accident on the Caland Canal in Rotterdam Europoort. The tanker was moored at a buoy while pumping oil onto the "Torm Lene". When the fuelling operation was finished, the line was disconnected and the hose was hoisted. From a height of fifteen feet the hose suddenly dropped down, hitting the captain of the tanker. The man was assisted by officers, ambulance staff and doctors of an air ambulance. He was then transported to a hospital in critical condition by ambulance. An investigation was launched by the Inspectie SZW, the "Torm Lene" left Rotterdam bound for Lome on Aug 29.
