Tanker boarded off Lome, pirates fled
The 'Torm Alexandra' was attacked by pirates and boarded on Nov 7, 2020, around 6 a.m. in the Gulf of Guinea, about 180 miles Southeast of Lome. It was en route from Walvis Bay to West Africa. The crew retreated to the citadel. As soon as the news of the pirate attack reached the shipping company's head office in Copenhagen, Torm's emergency team was activated, and immediately contacted Maritime Domain Awareness Trade - Gulf of Guinea (MDAT-GoG) which coordinates all military efforts in the area. The Italian frigate ITS 'Martinengo' was the warship closest to Torm Alexandra, and the frigate immediately set course for the tanker, while its helicopter was sent into the air to observe the situation. Marines from the frigate boarded the 'Torm Alexandra' in the night of Nov 7, and after an investigation of the entire ship, found that the pirates had fled. The crew was then able to leave the citadel, and regain control of the ship. The 20-man crew now has control of the ship again, and everyone was reported to be safe. Navy forces from Benin were chasing the pirates.
