Collision on the Rhine

On Nov 18, 2011, at 7.30 a.m. the German inland container m/v "Öhringen", 2527 ts (EU-No.: 05105320) was in collision with the "Carolin", 2863 ts (ENI-No.: 02330261) on the Rhine at Geisenheim. The "Carolin" was bound to Rüdesheim and carried no cargo, when she came off course and ran into the Wiesbaden-bound "Öhringen" which was loaded with containers. Both ships suffered substantial damage. The tank m/v was breached above the waterline, the container ship suffered major damage in the bow area, and a part of the cargo shioftged due to the collision causing a list which could be corrected by pumping ballast water in. At 10.30 a.m. the ships proceeded to unload or directly enter a repair yard. The damage amounted to about 100,000 €. The investigation into the exact cause of the accident was continuing.
