Master of TK Bremen released in Criminal Court

Fri Dec 14 11:12:04 CET 2018 Timsen

On Dec 13, 2018, the Criminal Court of Brest has released the Turkish master of the "TK Bremen", the only one involved in the loss of the ship, which grounded in the night of 15 to 16 Dec 2011 on a beach in Erdeven in Morbihan. Its 19 crew members were saved, but 112 tons of fuel oil leaked from the ship, causing an oil pollution at the site. During the October hearing, the prosecutor Jean- Philippe Récappé had requested a fine of 20,000 Euros and an arrest of six months against Rifat Tahmaz, 55, who had left the port despite the announcement of a storm in the morning of Dec 15. The ship was moored with only one anchor and started to drift. Deficiencies and shortcomings had, however, arisen during the trial on the part of the maritime administrations responsible for security in the area, and Captain Tahmaz's defense had not failed to attack them in his pleading, calling for the acquittal. Rifat Tahmaz was abandoned by the administrations in charge of the assistance to the ships, considered Stanislas Lequette, lawyer of the master. He pointed out the failings of the CROSS Etel in charge of maritime surveillance and the safety of ships in the area, accusing it of having asked no technical questions when the master reported his difficulties and having been delayed in communicating to him a new anchorage point after a first drift, as well as to have finally proposed one to him the most exposed to the wind" that is.

Master of TK Bremen accused of mishandling

Wed Apr 18 10:49:25 CEST 2012 Timsen

The master of the "TK Bremen" was questioned on Apr 17 by the Investigation Bureau BEA Mer regarding the grounding on Dec 16, 2012. The organization is accusing the captain of mishandling the ship after it was caught in the storm Joachim. On Dec 16 in the evening, the "TK Bremen" was drifting dangerously towards the coast a few hours after leaving the port of Lorient. Unable to stop the drift, the master too late had requested the assistance of a tug, given the weather conditions. BEA Mer also recommended a better supervision of ships by the port authorities regarding weather hazards at sea. The "TK Bremen" had become a total loass, and its dismantling was completed Jan. 26.

TK Bremen gone from the beach

Tue Jan 24 10:21:45 CET 2012 Timsen

The "TK Bremen" has gone after having been cut up in record time. By Jan 24 there was nothing left of the ship grounded off Morbihan. Last night the last sheet was cut which had been left there for the symbolic image. The Dutch Euro-Demolition removed the wreck ahead of the fixed schedule February 1. Some residues had been brught quickly under control with rubber dinghies equipped with anti pollution devices. A magnet has systematically swept the beach for remaining debris. Screening will be done up to two meters depth and the beach be reopening for the public on April 6.
