Prosecutor wants oligarch yacht to be confiscated
Palma's public prosecutor's office wants the "Tango", owned by the Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg, to be confiscated. At the moment, the yacht is being detained in the port of Palma at the request of the United States. Prosecutors have asked U.S. judicial authorities for more documentation on the case, iIn particular regarding information on whether criminal investigations are underway against the owner of the "Tango". The documentation originally provided by the United States was rather sparse. A Columbia court has entered the seizure order. Viktor Vekselberg's legal representative in Spain appealed to the Criminal Court in Palma, which executed the order. The main argument here is that the American judge's order is not sufficient because it does not clarify whether criminal proceedings are pending against the yacht owner. The cooperation agreements between the United States and Spain provide that a criminal investigation must have been initiated in one of the two countries in order to be able to proceed against the person to be investigated. The "Tango" was confiscated in early April in a joint action by the Guardia Civil, the FBI and other US authorities. Vekselberg was investigated for tax fraud and money laundering for trying to hide the ship. In addition, the report by an FBI agent that served as the basis for the seizure shows that Vekselberg was among those suspected of working with Putin in 2018.
