Crowley’s LNG-Fueled MV Taíno Completes Maiden Voyage to Puerto Rico

Sun Jan 13 17:17:18 CET 2019 arnekiel

The second of Crowley Maritime Corp.’s new LNG-powered combination container/roll-on roll-off vessels has just completed its maiden voyage to Puerto Rico. The ship, named Taíno, arrived at Crowley’s terminal in San Juan on Friday morning after departing on Jan. 8 from its mainland homeport of Jacksonville, Florida. Taíno is the second of two so-called “ConRo” vessels constructed for Crowley. Sister ship MV El Coquí began its first-in-class service in July 2018.

Crowley’s Second ConRo Ship Taíno Excels During First Speed Trial

“As part of the testing and commissioning phase of her construction, Taínorecently notched a top speed during speed trials of more than 24 knots,” said Cole Cosgrove, vice president, global ship management. The ship is now back at VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula, Miss., where the shipbuilder will continue the final construction, testing and commissioning process before delivering Taíno to Crowley later this year. The ability to attain high service speeds can be attributed to several design elements.
