Grounded tanker lightered and refloated
The "Synthese III", 1701 ts (EU-No.: 02007268), which had run aground on the Rhine near Oberwesel on July 5 around 2 a.m. could be refloated in the midday hours after a lighter tanker had pumped off 230 tons of the on the whole 1300 tons sulphuric acid in the foremidday. Three tugs had kept the casualty and the lighter tanker in position during the salvage work. The operation was difficult due to the rocky character of the river bottom at the grounding site. It was expected that the Rhine would be re-opened for ship traffic soon. No cargo loss, no spill reported.
