Fire on the Rhine
In the foremidday of July 30, 2019, a fire broke out in the engine room of the ‘Synthese 17‘, 2001 ts (EU-No.: 02326074), on the Rhine at Assmannshausen. The ship was heading towards Budenheim and transported 1,000 tons of phosphoric acid. The ship was disabled and had to drop anchor in the middle of the fairway. The water police Rüdesheim and Bingen had the fire under control quickly. There was no danger of spreading to the cargo. The water police deployed its fireboat. The five crew members were able to leave the ship unharmed, which was pulled by a local towing service with the "Rheinland" to the emergency berth in Bingen., where it arrived at 2 p.m. The water police started investigating the cause of the fire. Because of the heavy smoke, residents were called on the Warn App Katwarn to keep windows and doors closed and shut off ventilation and air conditioning. The B42 was completely closed for about one hour between Lorch and Rüdesheim.
