194 passengers evacuated from grounded ferry
The KMP "Swarna Cakra" ran aground 400 meters east of the Padangbai Port Pierin Bali Waters on May 26, 2019, at 8 a.m. with 194 passengers on board. The ship had sailed from Lembar Lombok at 12.15 a.m. and was about to berth when it got into the shallow waterrs. The ferry was hit by waves of 1-2 meters height at the Padang Bay in the Manggis District, Karangasem and got stuck on the reef. The passengers paniced and feared, and the Coastguard team from Basarnas with two RIBs along with fishermen and several speedboats started evacuating them. All of them were taken to shore at 12.45 p.m. They were accomodated in the waiting room of the port of Padangbai. The ferry was later refloated and towed to the port of Padangbai where underwater inspections were carried out. The divers stated there were minor scratches including the propellers.
