New tug for Svitzer UK built by Sanmar
Svitzer Europe are dominant providers of harbour towage activities in the UK, active in 15 ports. The different operational profile of each location demands particular vessel types and pulling power as evidenced by these latest arrivals of one single azimuth stern drive tug and a pair of azimuth tractors First tug to mention is the Sanmar built Svitzer Tyne. Built to a design from Robert Allan Ltd this tug follows the earlier delivery of a sister vessel also for Svitzer, destined to operate in Peru. Both are examples of Sanmar’s Boğaҫay series based on Robert Allan’s RAmparts 2400SX design, the SX denotes the series as being exclusively developed for Sanmar Shipyard. Exceptionally quick delivery from date of order was a crucial aspect of both the Peruvian and UK contract awards. Svitzer Tyne is classed by ABS and carries the notation ABS+ A1, +AMS; Unrestricted service. Main dimensions are LOA 24.4m, length DWL 23.38m, breadth moulded 11.25m, depth moulded 4.38m and maximum draught 5.1m. Tank capacities include 84,200 litres of fuel oil and 10,600 litres of fresh water. Main machinery comprises two electric start Caterpillar 3512C engines rated 1,765kW at 1,800rpm providing 60tbp via two Rolls-Royce US 205FP thrusters incorporating 2,400mm Ni-Al bronze propellers. The engines are installed at a slight decline towards the free end (no more than 8%) and the port engine has a PTO shaft to drive the Fi-Fi pump. Ship’s service generator sets provide electrical power via two Caterpillar C4.4 230/400V, 107kVA, 50Hz diesels. Svitzer Tyne is equipped primarily for towing over the bow for which a DMT type TW-E 250KN double drum winch is fitted rated at a maximum pull of 250KN (first layer) and braking force of 1,250KN (third layer). The winch has storage capacity for 135m of 40mm UHMWPE rope. The aft deck is largely clear with a closed transom and towing provision over the stern is supplied by a Data Disc type towing hook. Sanmar Delivers New Tug to Svitzer and the Port of Tyne
The Svitzer Tyne, as the name suggests, is heading to the Port of Tyne and will add to Svitzer’s fleet of three tugs currently operating there. Sanmar notes this Bogacay-Class vessel is the sister to another ordered by Svitzer for use in Peru this past summer and was designed by Robert Allan Ltd based on the Ramparts 2400SX series tug. Particulars: LOA: 24.4 m Beam: 11.25 m Bollard Pull: 60 ton Engines: 2x Caterpillar 3512 CHD, 1,765kW at 1,800 rev/min “Being on the North Sea coast, the port of Tyne is frequently exposed to some of the more severe weather the UK sees. With 60 tonnes bollard pull, Svitzer Tyne has been ordered and built ready to serve the needs of port of Tyne.” says Phil Dulson, managing director North UK for Svitzer Europe.
