Helmsman of Sveabulk fined
The helmsman of the "Sveabulk" who was on watch when the cargo ship ran onto rocks on July 11 in the Raft Sound has now been fined. The 65-year-old has to pay 12,000 Norwegian crowns or spend 24 days in jail. It was believed that the cause of the grounding was the 1st officer fell asleep after having drunk beer less than 8 hours before he started the watch.
Helmsman suspected to have fallen asleep
The Police suspected that the helmsman of the "Sveabul" has fallen asleep on the bridge before the grounding in the Raft Sound. He was alone on the bridge when the accident occurred. The "Sveabulk" had held course towards the land, instead of following the fairway. The mate is subject of investigations in regard of negligence. When the ship ran aground it suffered a 25 cm long and 1 cm wide gash in the forepeak. In addition, 20 square meters of shell plating stretching over 4 meters in the keel region were dented. The ship remains at HAMEK for repairs. It was estimated that it would take about a week to repair the ship.
Gravel carrier ran aground due to negligence
The "Svea Bulk" ran aground in the on July 11, 2012, at 6.15 p.m. at Brottøy in the northern Raft Sound. The ship got stuck on severeal metres length on the island. The crew contacted the Police and the Rescue Coordination Center. A tug was called, and the NCA assisted the ship. The "Svea Bulk" moved the excavator from the foreship to the aft in order to get it off the rocks which succeeded at 7.30 p.m. After refloating, the ship arrived at Stokmarknes at 8:45 p.m. where investigations were launched by police and Norwegian Maritime Directorate. The "Svea Bulk" had just come from Stokmarknes in ballast after having unloaded a cargo of asphalt and was bound for Blokken to load gravel. Regarding the reason of the mishap, it appeared that the officer on duty has wrongly navigated and was accused of negligence. The ship suffered a small gash in the forepeak of 25 cm length and about 1 cm diameter. 20 square meters of shell plating which stretched over 4 meters of the keel were dented, but not holed. The "Svea Bulk" may sail again once the Norwegian Maritime Directorate has given its permission and then proceed to HAMEK in Harstad, where the repairs will be carried out. The ship is expected in Harstad on July 13 at 8 a.m. The ship is usually sailing between Arnfinnsletta, Blokken, Kobbvågen and Melbu. Already on April 4, 2008, it ran into a stone breakwater at Porsgrunnselva due to low visibility. The ship, which was on its way to load the sand, hit the stone pier at the Peace Monument for fallen sailors, right at Porsgrunn bridge, and damaged it.
