One dead in collision
On Sep 9, 2020, around 8 p.m. the 'Surya Pertiwi' was in collision with a barge, which was towed the tug 'Aik Gadis' on the Mentaya Sampit River and loaded with 688 logs, the tug was pulling. The tug subsequently sank, and the ship's captain disappeared. The search for him was still on. The unloaded 'Surya Pertiwi' had departed from the Sampit Port with 15 crew members on board bound to Biringkassi, Jeneponto Regency, South Sulawesi. When crossing the Sampit shipping channel off the Balambit's Terminal one mile from Bagendang Harbour, the ship got out of control and hit the barge which was towed by the tug and coming from Tangar Towing Village, Mentaya Hulu District, Kotim. The barge was pushed forward and crashed into the tug which had four crew members on board and immediately sank. Visibility was restrictred due to heavy rain falls.
