Passengers mustered after fire in crew cabin
A small fire that broke out on the "Atlantic Vision" sailing from North Sydney to Argentia, N.L. and caused minimal damage to a crew cabin in the evening of July 1, 2016. Crewmembers of the ferry on noticed smoke coming from a portable refrigerator and acted quickly to extinguish the flames. The approximately 250 passengers and 100 crew onboard were mustered to a lounge area on the vessel to await the all clear from the crew putting out the fire. The passengers remained in this area as a precaution for about an hour. During that time they were kept up-to-date on what was happening and also received a visit from the ferry’s captain to reassure them. Once the fire was contained the ship continue on to Argentia. The fire occurred on Deck 9, an area of the vessel where many crew cabins are located but there are passenger cabins as well. Once the situation was under control the crew was allowed to return to their bunks. However, passengers boarding on that deck were relocated elsewhere on the ferry. The "Atlantic Vision" arrived on schedule at Argentia in the morning of July 2 and was expected to leave Newfoundland for North Sydney at 5 p.m. The investigation into the fire continued over the next few days.
