Ferry suffered structural damage in storm
On Dec 7, 2022, the operators of the 'Sugar Islander II' announced that due to a hit on the ferry in Sault STe. Marie on Dec 3 amid stormy winds, the ferry suffered structural damage on the bow. During an USCG inspection on Nov 7, it turned out that the damage was worse than originally thought. The island side ramp will be working in a limited capacity, and only light passenger vehicles will be allowed on board the ferry. Small, light trailers may be considered. All heavy vehicles such as semis, delivery trucks, construction vehicles were prohibited for a period of time yet to be determined, to assure the safety of the customers, crew, and vessel. The ferry will be taken out of service for repairs in the near future, and the 'D III' as a replacement ferry during this time.
