11 crewmembers of 'Suez' return to Cairo

Sun Jun 26 08:47:36 CEST 2011 arnekiel

The crew of the hijacked Egyptian ship MV Suez returned to Cairo after 11 months at sea, officials said. The 11 crew members of the MV Suez, which was hijacked by Somali pirates last year, arrived in Cairo Friday, al-Masry al-Youm reported. They were greeted by 150 relatives, who waited for their loved ones at the airport for 2 hours. "I waited for my husband Ayman to call from time to time. Calls lasted no longer than three minutes. All I could say in those three minutes was that we're all good. The call would be cut off before he could say anything to make me feel he was OK," said one woman. The crew members were rescued by a Pakistani military ship and brought to the Egyptian Embassy in Pakistan before flying home, where they were able to contact their families. The ship had been moving around the Somali coastline for the past 11 months. The ship owner was forced by the Foreign Ministry to pay a $2 million ransom, dropped to the ship by a private British plane, for the release of the crew.

The Sindh Governor, the chief of Ansar Burney Trust, the CPLC chief, the families of Pakistani hostages and many more prominent people received the freed hostages warmly at Karachi’s naval facility. Later, the crewmembers moved to Governor House to attend an official reception given by the Sindh governor in honour of hostages and their families. A special ceremony was organised at the Governor House to celebrate the arrival of all hostages from Somalia. A large number of prominent personalities including social and political leaders, artists, relatives of Pakistani hostages, a large number of media persons and others attended the ceremony.
