Tug and barge removed remains of sunken passenger ship Caprivi 93 from Vitte
In the morning of Dec 12, the tug 'Strohbrück' left Vitte with the cut up remains of the German passenger m/v ‘Caprivi 93‘, 328 gt(IMO: 6501147) and headed to Stralsund where the scrap is to be recycled. The wreck had been removed about nine years after its sinking at its berth south of Vitte in Greifswald. On Nov 29 a barge with a mobile crane and heavy lifting gear was towed to the site and the ship cut up in sections which were taken to Stralsund for disposal. The ship had served as passenger m/v 'Seebad Wustrow' after its delivery to the VEB Weiße Flotte in the GDR 1965. 1992 it was decommissioned and used as youth hostel, hotel ship and floating industrial monument in Vitte. Due to a lack of maintenance the vessel sprang aleak on Nov 25, 2010, and sank at its berth where it had been languishing since until the relevant water authority received the financial funding to remove the wreckage. The demolition work has meanwhile been completed. German report with photos and video: https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/mecklenburg-vorpommern/Ex-Baederdampfer-Caprivi-wird-verschrottet,caprivi100.html
