Swiss company seeks compensation for tanker arrest

Wed Nov 06 21:34:40 CET 2019 Timsen

On Nov 5, 2019, it was reported that the Swiss company 'AGTG SA' will seek compensation of one million US Dollars in damages from Ukraine for arresting the 'Mriya' , which was carrying 2,500 tonnes of diesel fuel to Romania. The 'Mriya' was arrested in Kherson on Aug 23for allegedly, illegally entering a port in Crimea, a year after Crimea re-joined the Russia Federation. In August 2019, the tanker transferred the fuel to another vessel during a ship-to-ship transfer in Kherson port waters. The Ukrainian authorities states that, the fuel was supplied to the ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol. The Swiss firm has had to pay one percent (US$15,262) of the cargo's cost for every day of delay. So far, the shipment is 70 days late, which amounts to more than US$1 million. Due to the arrest of the tanker, the company was not able to fulfil the obligations of the contract. AGTG SA reportedly, will seek damages from those responsible in Ukraine. On Nov 5, a Ukrainian court in Kherson was to look into whether the ship was impounded legally.
