Damaged ship broken up in Frederikshavn

Fri Jun 02 10:34:21 CEST 2017 Timsen

The "Sternö" has now been towed to JATOB Skipsobhug in Fredrikshavn for scrapping. The oldest merchant ship in Sweden and a well-known guest in Lidköping has gone. After the ship capsized in Lilla Edet in March after loading grain in Lidköping bound to Denmark, it was righted and taken to Gothenburg, but was found to be beyong repair. It has been towed to the Danish shipyard for scrapping and recycling.

Ship enroute to breakers

Sat Apr 08 14:13:43 CEST 2017 Timsen

On Apr 7 at 9 a.m. the Danish tug "Störesund" left Gothenburg with the "Sternö" in tow enroute to breakers. They arrived in Frederikshavn at 5.30 p.m. the same day.

Sternö towed to Gothenburg

Wed Mar 22 10:18:18 CET 2017 Timsen

The "Sternö" has regained its own buoyancy after the last grain was sucked out, and was under tow to the Arendal yard in Gothenburg on March 22, ETA 4 p.m. The two tugs "Bob" (IMO: 9155236) and "Bonden" (IMO: 7388669) had left from Gothenburg on March 21 at 8 p.m. and were in place the next morning at 9 a.m. At 4.30 p.m. the "Sternö" was docked at berth 752 at the old Arendal shipyard in Gothenburg. Later she will be taken to Denmark and possibly scrapped there. On March 20 the "Sternö" had been pulled through the lock at Lilla Edet and berthed at a dock south of the lock where she could be inspected by the Swedish Transport Agency and the investigation commission's board in order to assess whether there were any requirements that must had to be meet in order to tow her down to Gothenburg. Traffic on the Göta River was back to normal and should not be disturbed by the towing of the "Sternö", if nothing unexpected happened. The collaboration between the different parties involved has been very good, among them the Maritime Administration, the Swedish Transport Agency, insurance companies, salvage companies as well as the Lilla Edet and the County Administrative Board, and they have learned many lessons for the future.
