Engine failure off Belfast

The 'Stena Hibernia', while departing from Belfast had to be towed to safety by two tugs after it suffered an engine failure on the morning of Oct 12, 2024, at 9.30 a.m. en route to Heysham. It came to a halt off the coast of Holywood in County Down and dropped anchor, before being towed away for repairs. The ship suffered a complete loss of power during the scheduled departure from Belfast. Stena celebrates first anniversary of Stena Hibernia

Stena Line is celebrating the first anniversary of the STENA HIBERNIA on its Liverpool (Birkenhead) to Belfast route and one year on, the service continues to deliver a strong performance which has helped the leading ferry company increase its freight traffic. Richard Horswill, Stena Line’s Head of Freight UK and Ireland said: “Stena Line introduced the STENA HIBERNIA in November 2013 to complement the STENA LAGAN and STENA MERSEY to help cope with increased demand for freight capacity on this route and enable our customers to deliver on next-day orders to their client base.

Stena Line adds third vessel to Liverpool-Belfast service

Stena Line will introduce a third vessel to its Liverpool – Belfast service this week in response to increasing customer demand. The Stena Hibernia will begin its maiden voyage on Tuesday and will add a further eight crossings each week, bringing the total number of sailings on the vital freight route to 34. “We are delighted to welcome the Stena Hibernia to the Port of Liverpool, as it not only reinforces our partnership with Stena Line, but highlights a positive period of growth for the freight market,” declared Ross Thompson, group sales director at the Peel Ports Group, who own and operate the Port of Liverpool. “Both Peel Ports and Stena Line are committed to the development of the freight market in the Irish Sea and these extra crossings place both Belfast and the Port of Liverpool as significant freight hubs.” The Stena Hibernia, will now depart Liverpool Tues – Fri at 0300hrs and will depart Belfast Tues – Fri at 1500hrs.
