Bulkcarrier struck power line
The "Star Luster" struck a power line stretching over a channel in Stockton port in the morning of Jan 19, 2016 at 8 a.m. The accident happened while the ship shifted from one berth to another. One of vessel’s cranes was extended and hit the high-wire transmission line which crosses the channel just east of the confluence between the channel and the San Joaquin River, just beyond the west end of West Fremont Street on the north side of the channel. The line that was cut was a 60 kilovolt transmission line with switches on either side of the channel in anticipation of just such a break. The outage was leaving more than 5000 local residents without electricity and affectied customers from Highway 4 to Alpine Avenue. Lights were also out along Highway 4 in Stockton. Pacific Gas and Electric Co. crews were working at several locations in the city to isolate the problems. Within less than two hours, power was restored to more than 2,000 customers in the area. Before noon, all but 20 customers had their electricity back on.
