Hazmat situation in Wilmington

Mon Jan 28 22:39:45 CET 2013 Timsen

Crews of the Wilmington Fire Department responded to a call of a possible chemical leak aboard the "Star Fraser" in the state port in the morning of Jan 28, 2013, around 10:00 a.m. The units found there was no leak at the port, but the Port Authority said crews with the Port Authority police, WFD and Coast Guard were involved in a potential hazardous materials situation. The the port notified the Coast Guard when the "Star Fraser" pulled into Wilmington. There was a leak on the vessel about ten days ago at another port. That leak has since been cleaned up and taken care of, but four crew members to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and were complaining of residual effects from the prior spill on Jan 28 morning. Two went to hospital because of proximity to the chemical spill that happened 10 days ago. The other two suffered from smoke inhalation from a welding project. There was no known risk to the environment or surrounding areas. Crews were working to determine what the substance is.
