Grounded barge refloated
The "Stadt Nürnberg", 2223 ts (EU-No.: 05111560), was refloated by a work boat on Dec 30. Initially it had been intended to remove a gravel bar which had built up during an attempt of the Slovakian master to refloat his ship. But the grounded vessel had slipped from the shallow towards the fairway and hampered the barge "Raphaela" (MMSI: 211183170), being equipped with a dredger, which was called to remove the gravel bar, so that the "Stadt Nürnberg" first had to be removed to enable proper work. The ship was pulled to Deggendorf for surveys of the faulty rudder gear. The "Raphaela" was busy removing the shoal since the morning. Work was interrupted when darkness fell. Grounding on the Danube
On Dec 29, 2016, the "Stadt Nürnberg", 2223 ts (EU-No.: 05111560), being underway with a pushed barge enroute to Straubing-Sand with a cargo of 1600 tons rape, suffered a rudder failure on the Danube at Metten. Also the emergency rudder could not keep the vessels in the fairway. They veered to port and got stuck on a gravel bar. During attempts to get off, the Serbian master created a gravel wall of 70 centimeters height which threatened all ship traffic on the Danube due to its low water level. The river was barred for ship traffic thus between Deggendorf and Straubing until dredgers have removed the obstruction. Refloating attempts may only be carried out when there is enough water depth. Also the rudder gear has to be checked and at least part of the cargo to be lightered.
