Injured crew members still in critical condition
Hhazardous materials team officers confirmed that the incident that occurred onboard the 'Hamburg DW' was caused by an ammonia leak. Local authorities and the captain of the vessel checked the area and ensured that the valves were closed and that the vessel was safe again. Three crew members were still in critical condition, after inhaling ammonia gas off Port Klang in the evening of April 6. The tanker had turned to Port Klang and moored at the ports' anchorage at 4 p.m. The Malaysian Maritime Agency MMEA deployed emergency teams with a hazmat unit. The injured crew members were hospitalized at Port Klang. As of April 8, the LPG tanker remained moored in pos. 02° 47.72' N 101° 11.81' E.
Three injured and one dead due to inhaling ammonia gas
One of the 25 crew members of the 'Hamburg DW' died, three were injured due to an ammonia gas leak enroute to the Zhanjiang Port from Al Duqum in Oman, about 0.7 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Selat Kering, on April 6, 2021. Firefighters received a call at 12.59 a.m. and deployed members from the Port Klang Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) and the Dangerous Chemicals Special Team (HAZMAT) from BBP Shah Alam to the position. Two of the three, including the deceased man, were from Turkey, while another was an Indian. All victims were then taken to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) for further treatment.
