Pilot helicopter crashed approaching MV SQUIRESHIP
A Mackay Helicopters Airbus Helicopters EC135P2+ (VH-ZGA) was destroyed when it apparently flew into the sea while on approach to the bulk iron ore carrier MV SQUIRESHIP, underway some 30km off Port Hedland, Western Australia, on the night of March 14, 2018. The accident happened in darkness (2330L). One of the two crew of the helicopter was rescued from a life raft about an hour after the accident. The other pilot is missing. The MV Squireship had departed Port Hedland at about 2130L en route to Qingdao, China and the helicopter was tasked to collect the marine pilot from it once it was clear of the harbour approaches. www.flightglobal.com
