Spes rescued crew of French yacht

Fri Jun 29 12:29:58 CEST 2018 Timsen

The Italian Coast Guard jointly with the "Spes" rescued three distressed sailors of French nationality, who ended up at the mercy of four meters high waves about 150 miles from the Calabrian coas, on June 28, 2018. They had abandoned the sinking "Abahanna", a sailboat of about 12 meters, and the crew - aged between 70 and 91 years - boarded a liferaft in which they waited for the rescue. The request for assistance was received by the French MRCC through the emergency signal who contacted the counterpart of the Reggio Calabria.- A particularly complex rescue operation was started, hampered to the considerable distance from the coast and the rough conditions of the sea. A P-180 Coast Guard aircraft was deployed to locate the three survivors. The operating room of the Coast Guard of Reggio Calabria, coordinator of the rescue operation, identified the "Spes" through the monitoring systems which proceeded to recover the castaways.
