Barge slammed into bridge

On Jan 24, 2017, at 07.15 a.m. the "Specht", 1635 ts (EU-No.: 02333472), allided with the a pedestrian bridge crossing the Dortmund-Ems-Canal at Lingen. The ship was underway from the Holthausen-Biene refinery to Bottrop. The 35 year old master misjudged the height of 4,25 meters of the Meckeer Bridge in darkness and low visibility and started to lift the lowered wheelhouse to early. Its upper part slammed into the bridge contstruction, and the wheelhouse suffered severe damage. It was estimated to be around 20.000 Euro. The ship was detained by the waterway authority in Münster. No damage was found at the bridge during an inspection.
