Wreck raised and pulled to San Giorgio

Wed Jun 17 10:24:28 CEST 2015 Timsen

On June 16 the wreck of the "Sparviero" was recovered within an offshore mussel farm between Civitanova and Porto Sant'Elpidio. In sinking on Apr 2, the captain Leonardo Chai and one of the crew members, Aldo Leo, had managed to escape: the other crew members, Michele Fini, Giorgio Toma Viorel, Maroga Costeli and Simion Vasile (the latter three all Romanians) lost their lives. The recovery was carried out with the crane barge "Fortunato" from Chioggia. Work started at 7 a.m. and was coordinated by the port captain of San Benedetto del Tronto along with divers from Ortona and the Maritime District Office in Porto San Giorgio. At 3.30 p.m. the wreck was drained and towed to Porto San Giorgio where it was taken ashore at 6 p.m. at a shipyard of the port. Wreck of sunken vessel found

Sat Apr 04 11:06:01 CEST 2015 Timsen

On Apr 3 the search for the missing two crew members of the "Sparviero" was continued after the ship sank at dawn on Apr 2 off of Civitanova Marche. The operations were coordinated by the Maritime Directorate of Ancona, with four patrol boats, an ATR42 aircraft of the Coastguard and a team of divers of the fire brigade of Teramo equipped with sonar. In the afternoon they were able to locate the sunken vessel within the area occupied by the mussel plant, where the ship was collecting mussels at the time of the sinking. First checks are carried out on board within the deckhouse and engine room without finding the two missing persons. The search was suspended because of low visibility and low water temperature soon after. They were to be continued on Apr 4 if sea conditions allowed.
