Southwester under tow
As of Nov 7, the 'Southwester' was still afloat with a list to port side and low in the water. She was meanwhile under tow of the tug 'Portugs Sines' (IMO 8513754) which had sailed from Lisbon on Nov 5 at 8.20 p.m. towards the casualty.
Crew abandoned freighter off Figueira da Foz
Enroute from Montoir-de-Bretagne to Sevilla with a cargo of steel, the 'Southwester' issued a distress signal about 430 miles off Figueira da Foz on Nov 5, 2020, at 12.36 a.m. which was received by the MRCC in Lisbon, due to a flooding of the engine room and the danger of capsizing. All 14 crew, seven Turks and seven Georgians, were rescued by a nearby cargo ship, the Liberian flagged 'EM Hydra', half an hour later and taken to the port of Leixões at 10.30 a.m. where they were handed over to the care of health authorities and tested for COVID-19 before being heard by the Maritime Police. The Portuguese Air Force sent a helicopter to monitor the ship, which was drifting in southwestern direction with the currents with trasmitter still working. The Portuguese Navy deployed the frigate 'Álvares Cabral' with divers on board, with direct contact with the 'Southwester' expected at 6 p.m. in order to investigate the situation and act in conformity. The ship was located by the helicopter C-295M of the 502 Squadron with a slight list to port, but seemingly stable. The lifeboat of the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos (ISN) the 'Patrão Macatrão', was out of service already since December 2019 due to a broken propeller.
