Pirates sentenced to several years of jail after attack on Guanabara
A 21 year old Somali pirate was sentenced to 11 years jail for in Japan for his involvement in the hijack attempt of the "Guanabara" in March 20111, off the coast of Oman. Three other men have already been convicted for the attack. Two of the four pleaded guilty and received 10-year prison sentences. A fourth man who was very young when hijacking attempt took place, got less, as he admitted his guilt. He was sentenced to a punishment "of not less than five and up to nine years in prison." The offender pleaded not guilty. He said his boat just wanted to ask for help from the tanker. On the basis of the testimony of the three other men, he was considered to be part of the crew, who were involved in hijacking attempt. The hijacking was thwarted by the U.S. Navy which captured then pirates and then handed them over to the Japan Coast Guard.

Vessel was boarded by Somali pirates on Mar 5 2011 about 328 nautical miles south-east of Duqm in southern Oman, crew hided in citadel. US commandos from the destroyer USS Bulkeley freeded tanker Mar 6 and captured 4 pirates, crew unharmed.
