MOL Coal Carrier Named ‘Bulk Ship of the Year’
The new ECO coal carrier MV Soma Maru has been named the “Bulk Ship of the Year” at the International Bulk Journal Awards 2014 held in Rotterdam last month. The MV Soma Maru was jointly developed by Sanoyas Shipyard and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and is a state-of-the-art coal carrier with a wide-beam/shallow-draft design, a number of safety features and energy-saving specifications. The vessel was singled out for its versatility and environmental performance. The vessel was delivered in July 2014 at Mizushima Shipyard, part of Sanoyas Shipbuilding Corporation, following the February delivery of sister vessel Akatsuki. Soma Maru’s namesake comes from the vessel which previosly served Tohoku Electric Power for 19 years. The Soma Maru is operated by MOL under a long-term consecutive voyage service contract with Tohoku Electric for the transportation of coal for the company’s thermal power plants.
