Tanker remains caught in damaged lock

Sat Oct 12 12:59:16 CEST 2013 Timsen

On Oct 12 the "Solero" remained caught in the Kiel-Holtenau locks after the allision with gate 6. The canal authority opened the North lock the overhaul of which had already been almost comppleted before, to prevent a total closure of the canal during the night as an immediate repair was impossible in the darkness. On Oct 12 the crane "Griep To" and the work boat "NOK 1" were within the closed lock jointly with the tanker. It was hoped to finish an emergency repair in the run of the day. The Police meanwhile interrogated the tanker crew, and an inspection of the engine which had failed during mooring was undertaken. After repairs at the lock were finished, the vessel finally left at 5.230 p.m. bound for Raa in Sweden. German report with photo: http://www.kn-online.de/Lokales/Kiel/Schleuse-wieder-einsatzbereit

Last large lock in Kiel-Holtenau disabled after hit by tanker

Fri Oct 11 20:33:08 CEST 2013 Timsen

On Oct 11, 2013, at 5 p.m. the "Solero" suffered an engine blackout at the end of its eastbound transit of the Kiel Canal and allided with the large southern lock in Kiel-Holtenau which was the last remaining larg lock there due to repair works. The ship, which was underway from Hamburg to Svetly without cargo, could not be stopped by an emergency anchoring manoever and hit the guide rail with its bulbous bow and tore it open so that the gate could no longer be opened. Ship traffic on the Kiel Canal was affected by the loss of the lock as also the new northern lock and one of the two small elder locks acutally is out of order. The Chinese 180-m-tanker "Taizhou Pioneer" was advised to stop in Rendsburg. The ship was secured by the escort tug "Bugsier 15" in the crossover point Schülp. Workers of the Canal authority in Kiel were called to start an emergency repair. By 8.30 p.m. the tanker was still within the lock.
