Cruise ship lost wheelhouse in allision

The 'Arkona' allided with the Dorkwerder Bridge over Van Starkenborgh Canal near Dorkwerd on Dec 30, 2019, at 1 a.m.. The 93 crew members and passengers remained unharmed. The accident was the result of a wrong estimation of the master about the height of the bridge. The ship lost its wheelhouse which was destroyed and landed on the aft deck. The Dorkwerder Bridge suffered only little damage and was surveyed by Rijkswaterstaat. The allision therefore had no consequences for road and ship traffic on the main Lemmer-Delfzijl waterway. The ship docked at Aduard after the accident and was banned from sailing until an emergency wheelhouse had been installed. In the morning a certified company approved the wheelhouse, and the ship was given permission to continue its journey early in the afternoon. The ship initially was headed to Rotterdam but to make up for lost time, the cruise now ended in Amsterdam.
