Six rescued and one dead after accident of semi-rigid boat

Wed Oct 09 10:22:46 CEST 2024 Timsen

On Oct 5, 2024, at around 2 a.m., the CROSS Med was alerted after the collision of an 8-meter semi-rigid boat with seven people on board, with a mooring box in the Bay of Canebiers, in the Gulf of Saint Tropez. The CROSS deployed the H160 Belligou T helicopter of the 32F flotilla of the French Navy base in Hyères, the 'SNS 004 - Bailli de Suffren III' and the semi-rigid 'SNS 7-026 - Torpes' from the SNSM station in Saint Tropez, semi-rigids of the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of Var (SDIS 83) with an underwater team and several land resources of the SDIS 83 (VSAV, land patrols). Shortly after 2:30 a.m., the 'SNS 7-026' arrived in the area, in contact with the victims, and reported six people found, injured and one person missing. While the victims were being treated, the CROSS reinforcedthe system by an SMUR team from the SAMU 83 embarked on board the 'SNS 004' and the coastal nautical brigade (BNC) of Issambres of the Departmental Gendarmerie of Var. Around 3 a.m., after being taken care of by the sea rescue resources, the six victims were brought back to land aboard the 'SNS 004'. Three of them were seriously injured and three less injured. All were taken to hospitals in the department. At the same time, the search for the seventh missing person, a 37-year-old man, which continued until 5:30 a.m., proved unsuccessful and was suspended until daybreak. While the BNC des Issambres and the municipal police of Sainte-Maxime took turns in the area for the rest of the night, the search resumed around 7:30 a.m., with the 'SNS 7-026' and an underwater team from the SDIS 83. Shortly after 9 a.m., the divers located a body submerged at a depth of 25 meters, about thirty meters from the scene of the accident, which turned out to be the person who had initially disappeared. An investigation was opened by the Draguignan Public Prosecutor's Office and entrusted to the BNC des Issambres to determine the circumstances of the accident.
