Trawler caught in the act while dumping dead fish
The "Akraberg» was caught in the act by the Norwegian Coastguard vessel "Nordkapp" while dumping dead fish in the Norwegian economic zone on the Thor Iversen bank about 160 nautical miles north of Vardø on Dec 9, 2014. Coast Guard inspectors discovered that fish was dropped off the side of the trawler and the draft of fish continued even after inspectors had boarded the ship and came down into fish factory. It was revealed that 42 catfish and four cod were thrown in the waste chute. The Faroese company had to pay a bank guarantee of 450,000 Norwegian crowns, and the skipper was fined with 30,000 Norwegian crowns. The trawler was released by the Coast Guard and could continue fishing. Draft of dead or dying fish is strictly prohibited in Norwegian waters.
