Boat in distress off Weymouth
The RNLI lifeboat from Portsmouth was launched on Oct 7, 2020, at 9.10 a.m. following a Mayday call by the 'Smit Frome' which had suffered a damage below the waterline and was taking on water. The Royal Navy vessel HMS 'Magpie' went alongside the casualty prior to the arrival of the lifeboat and transferred a dewatering pump onto the vessel which was four miles east of Weymouth Harbour. Upon its arrival the lifeboat deployed two crew members and a larger pump onto the 'Smit Frome' which managed to stem the flow of water sufficiently enough to allow the stricken vessel to be towed to the Portland Marina where it could be lifted out of the water.
