Sat Feb 25 16:17:51 CET 2012 Timsen

The repair of the "Smaragd“, which had suffered water ingress on Feb 7 in Brake, is completed. The Elsfleth Shipyard carried out permanent repairs to the hull which probably had been cracked by ice. The ship had sailed from Brake on Feb 16, docked at Elsfleth on Feb 21 and was completed and allowed to sail on Feb 25.

Leak in ship's bottom patched

Thu Feb 09 14:11:22 CET 2012 Timsen

The hole in the bottom of the "Smaragd“ was finger-sized, but it caused a water ingress of 10 cubic metres within short time while the ship was berthed at the South Pier in Brake. The „Smaragd“ had come from Bremerhaven and was to load in Brake when the alarm sounded in the engine room on Feb 7 az 9 p.m. Due to the low tide the "Smaragd“ was lying six metres underneath the quayside and was hampered to reach the berth by ice. The fire rescue boarded the ship with ladders and a mobile crane. The tugs "Arion“ and "Berne“ pushed the ship towards the quay. A submersible pump helped to gain control of the water ingress. The "Arion“ took the skipper's wife and their son aboard " Around midnight the "Smaragd“ was towed into the inner port of Brake by the harbour tug "Braksiel“ where a diver from Oberhausen patched the leak. A permanent repair is to be carried out in Bremen lateron. The fire brigade of Brake was called to the "Smaragd" in the evening of Jan 7, 2012, after the master had remarked water ingress in the bilge. The fire rescue used a submersible pump to dewater the ship. The master's wife and a child were evacuated onto a tug. The cause of the water ingress was not yet known.
