Leak in ship's bottom patched
The hole in the bottom of the "Smaragd“ was finger-sized, but it caused a water ingress of 10 cubic metres within short time while the ship was berthed at the South Pier in Brake. The „Smaragd“ had come from Bremerhaven and was to load in Brake when the alarm sounded in the engine room on Feb 7 az 9 p.m. Due to the low tide the "Smaragd“ was lying six metres underneath the quayside and was hampered to reach the berth by ice. The fire rescue boarded the ship with ladders and a mobile crane. The tugs "Arion“ and "Berne“ pushed the ship towards the quay. A submersible pump helped to gain control of the water ingress. The "Arion“ took the skipper's wife and their son aboard " Around midnight the "Smaragd“ was towed into the inner port of Brake by the harbour tug "Braksiel“ where a diver from Oberhausen patched the leak. A permanent repair is to be carried out in Bremen lateron.
